Education and Work Experience
Originally from Philadelphia and raised in Southern California, Dr. Mark Robinson first arrived at City College of San Francisco (CCSF) as a student where he participated in athletics and earned an Associate’s Degree. Subsequently he transferred to Indiana University on a basketball scholarship, where he completed his undergraduate studies and later earned a Master’s Degree in Counseling and Guidance.
Moving to the United Kingdom, Dr. Robinson began his doctoral studies at the University of Manchester. In addition to his doctoral work, he also played professional basketball internationally and was Chief Executive Officer of the Basketball Players Association in the United Kingdom, a labor organization comprised of professional players, coaches, and team owners.
Dr. Robinson completed his doctorate degree in Faculty of Education, with a thesis entitled, Black Athletes Perceptions on Counseling Services in American Colleges and Universities. He remained in England and received a Postgraduate Certificate in Education with an emphasis in Teaching and Student Learning Outcomes at Bolton Institute. While enrolled at Bolton Institute, he taught Sports Psychology at Edge Hill University located in Ormskirk Lancashire, England.
Returning to San Francisco and CCSF, Dr. Robinson accepted a counseling faculty position, working with the college’s African American Achievement Program, New Student Counseling, and Athletics departments where he concentrated on bridging academics and athletics via the programs and services offered by New Student Counseling and Athletics. Successfully moving into college administration, he was named Associate Dean of Students, Dean of Student Affairs, and currently is the Vice Chancellor of Student Development.
Professional Development
To strengthen his effectiveness as a leader, Dr. Robinson has participated in many professional development programs and associations. He was selected as an American Council on Education (ACE) Fellow for the 2008-2009 school year and is conducting his placement at Pepperdine University, located in Malibu, California. In addition, Dr. Robinson was a participant in the Harvard Institute Educational Management (IEM) Class in 2008. In 2005 and 2006 he participated in the Association of California Community College Administrators (ACCCA) Administration 101 and Mentor Programs, and he completed the American Association of Community Colleges (AACC) Future Leaders Program 1 and 2 in 2004 and 2007. Through his participation in professional development programs and associations, Dr. Robinson has also presented workshops on a variety of topics at both the state and national level.
Community Outreach and Philosophy
Dr. Robinson’s commitment to higher education led him to co-found the non-profit organization African American Male Education Network and Development (A2MEND). He currently serves as the President of A2MEND and participates in the Global Development and Funding aspects of the organization’s strategic plan. A2MEND’s membership consists of African American men and seasoned college faculty and administrators who work together to provide scholarships, mentorships, workshops and other programs.
Having worked and lived internationally, Dr. Robinson has developed a personal belief that educators should empower students to think and move beyond the physical and cultural limits of the United States borders and explore global experiences through the use of art, science, athletics, and other mediums. His passion for creating access to higher education is evident through his constant research and development of new programs and services for students.
Personal
Dr. Robinson currently resides in San Francisco where he enjoys spending time with his wife Lindsay and two sons, Nathan and Marcus. His many interests and passions include his family, international travel, athletics, community service and engagement, collecting hourglasses, and the process of learning.
